| Neville has been turning, metal for many years and wood since inheriting a 200 year old treadle lathe (thought to be German in origin and dating to about 1820) that was originally his great, great, great, grandfather. The lathe does both wood and metal, it has all the necessary gears and cogs to turn any imperial screw thread. Nowadays, Neville used a new lathe (comparitively speaken as it was made in 1949) a three phase Union Jubilee, fitted with a variable speed. Most of the wood used is green and sourced locally, but for any lessons kiln dried wood is used (usually ash or elm). If you would like a lesson, they usually take about 2 hours (including a tea break and some of Sonia's home-made shortbread - or similar) and cost £25.00 per hour. At the end you will have a bowl to take home AND all your fingers... Obviously, the lesson have to be pre-arranged. So what a lovely way of making that special souvenir to take home with you. HAND MADE BY YOU... Please note turning can be dusty and you will get covered in shavings, although a turning jacket is available for your use. Safety glasses are provided.

Here is a "You Tube" video of guests making a "combined" bowl. |
The gallery at Drynachan is nearly always open, especially for our guests. So you can peruse Neville woodturning, wooden games and clocks. Sonia's watercolours and often other local crafts, from some friends in the village. Its is hoped that next year there will be a larger studio within the grounds where we can showcase more local crafts.
